GOD REWARDS THE GOOD

Today’s Reading:

2 King 4:8-17

“About this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms.” (v. 16a)

Doctor Benson was a household blessing to the people of the town where he established his hospital. He treats the poor without putting his bills first and would do anything to save the dying, even if it means the bill is on him. However, the only thing people know about him was that he is a good man, but no one knows anything about his family life. One day, an accident victim was rushed to his hospital while he was not in the office, although he was somewhere close to relaxing. He said to himself, when he was called, he asked himself, "what have I gained from being a good man?" For the first time, he declined to rush down to treat the young man involved in a road accident who died a few minutes later because there was no competent hand to treat him.

When Dr Benson finally arrived after about an hour, he met a woman by the door crying. Unfortunately, she was the woman who had a son for him many years ago. Although he has married another woman, they have been barren. The bad news is that the accident victim was the only son he could have had to be happy for now that he is past reproductive age medically. In life, you cannot afford to stop being good. It is your consistency in good works that pays better. Unlike Dr Benson, the Shunammite woman in our text today was a good woman to Elijah, the prophet. At the point where she could have given up on good deeds because of her self-disappointment, she decided to increase it toward the man of God. She would not consider God to be unfaithful to her family because she was barren.

She was a wealthy woman, and so it was easy for Elijah to assume all is well with her whenever he comes briefly to eat. However, because the woman increased her good deeds by making a room in her house for the prophet, Gehazi, the prophet's servant noticed that she has been barren because they have had more time to know her better. Her good works were rewarded as the man of God prophesied to her that in a year, she would have a child and God, who rewards people who are good blessed her with a son according to the prophet's word.

You may not know when and how the Lord planned to reward you for being good. Therefore, rather than quitting from helping others, choose to do more because, in the end, the faithful Lord will show up to pay you back massively.
