Today’s Reading:

Jeremiah 29:1-24

The above passage is the content of a letter written by the prophet Jeremiah to the Jews in captivity in Babylon. In these times of economic hardship that is ravaging the country and several parts of the world, the message in this passage is very apt. Judah had been carried away captive by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar. It was a time of hopelessness and despair for the Jews. They felt God had abandoned them amid all the troubles they were going through.

The letter from Jeremiah conveying God's word of assurance was to help them re-focus their minds and thoughts about their future and the mind of God towards them. The key message in this passage can be found in verse 11 [KJV] "For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." This is a passage that is quite popular and has been quoted oftentimes to assure God's people of His mind towards them. A summary of some of the problems confronting us as a nation includes the following:

  • High cost of living

  • Job losses

  • High crime rate

  • Absence of power (electricity)

  • Poor infrastructure, and so on.

In Jeremiah's letter, God encouraged Israel's children to marry, beget children, and live their normal lives. The situation then for the children of Israel is similar to what we are facing. As children of God, we must not wail and complain like the world's children are currently doing. We must not join them in going on demonstrations or looting warehouses. Our focus should be on God who is our provider. God is saying to you as He did in Jeremiah's letter, go ahead and get married, beget children, go to church, give offerings, pay your tithes and sow into the work of God in your local assembly. Do not fail to do any of these under the excuse that "things are hard". Remember, the Bible says that the just shall live by faith. The Bible also says that he who observes the weather will not sow. It is in times of hardship such as we are now that God manifests His power and glory in the lives of His children.

VICTOR ABASSAH

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud:

Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I believe and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart, keep me from all evil, and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank You, Lord!

If you said the above short prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and report to the resident reverend, pastor or priest, as the case may be.

Prayer:

  1. Father, I thank You for Your word of encouragement in the name of Jesus

  2. I silence every voice of discouragement speaking into my life in the name of Jesus

  3. O Lord strengthen me at this time in the name of Jesus

  4. My Father manifest Your power and greatness in Your church in the name of Jesus

  5. O Lord speak peace on to our nation in the name of Jesus.
