Today’s Reading:
Acts 18:24-26
“And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.” (Acts 18:24-26)
A . The Well-Informed Man
Apollos was competent student of the scriptures.
He was diligent and accurate about the messiah
He cultivated great biblical knowledge expressed that knowledge well.
B. INFORMED MAN FALLS INTO ERROR
Apollos had not yet heard that the Messiah had come.
Apollos didn’t understand that the Holy Spirit had been given (Acts 19:1-2).
Apollos didn’t know about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Apollos didn’t fully understand the scope of the Gospel message—the death and resurrection of Jesus.
C AQUILA AND PRISCILLA CORRECTED THE ERROR OF APOLLOS.
They heard Apollos speak in the synagogue, and noticing his strengths, they also realized Apollos needed more information in light of the good news about Jesus.
These humble servants of God didn’t embarrass Apollos. Instead, they took him under their watch to explain “the way of God more adequately” (Acts 18:26).
In other words, Aquila and Priscilla preached about Jesus the Messiah—His life, death, and resurrection—and passed Paul’s teachings on to Apollos too.
CONCLUSION
The greatest tragedy with error is like a man Crying for the dead and keeping malice with the living.
