Today’s Reading:

Psalm 5 (3)

"Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly." (v.3 NLT)

Psalm 5 serves as a morning prayer which expresses the psalmist unwavering confidence in the Lord's help and protection. As he makes his requests known to God, he waits patiently for his response (vv. 1-3). As he lays in details the scheming of the wicked before God, he was not carried away by these. And because God does not subscribe to the wickedness of the wicked, he is aware the wicked cannot coexist with God (vv.4-6,9; 1:5). As he keeps coming to God in prayers, he prays also for the godly community (vv. 10-12; 3:8). As he starts and ends each day with prayer, he patiently waits for God's fresh emphasis on his fidelity and goodness. Notice that he does not demand God’s grace as right, but he patiently hope in it (Mic. 7:6; Hab. 2:1)

Mercy of God expresses his steadfast or unfailingly love, and covenant loyalty or loving kindness (v.7). Expressing his mercy, therefore, is a primary benefit of our faith in him. For us to express his consistent and fidelity love for us, we must address his love towards us in the context of his covenant. In his loving kindness is his promises, forgiveness, compassion and his blessings. His assured benefits are unending. When we have this type of God's faithfulness at the back of our mind, we are led to fear God in a reverent obedience to his law (v7) and his unspeakable joy, protection and blessings will overwhelm us as a shield (vv. 11-12; 3:3-6).

Prayer is our way of connecting to God in all our life’s situations. In prayer, God not just hears us, he listens to our hearts more than our words. We can talk to him any time of the day and he listens. We should learn a great lesson from the late evangelist, Billy Graham, he is described as a man of prayer. He starts the day with prayer. Prays on the table at meals, on the way to engagements, wherever he was, whatever he was doing, he prays.

We should not view prayer as an event, but a way of being in relationship with God. We are able to develop this intimacy when we view prayer as a way of life. We are to begin the day with hands and voice raised in conversation with God (v.3; 109:4). Our thirst and longings for God will make us always to want to be in the presence of God (42:1-4; 84:1-2; 130:5-6).

Prayer:

  1. Thank you, Lord, for the power in prayer; Holy Ghost, repair and rekindle your fire in my prayer altar, in Jesus name.

  2. Anything I have eaten or swallowed, assigned to attack my health, die in the name of Jesus.

  3. Rain of divine immunity, envelop and soak my life, in Jesus name.

  4. Father uproot everything you have not planted in your church and revive your Pentecostal fire and power in Jesus name.

  5. Father, thank you for sustaining Nigeria with your power and fire. Give our leaders fresh hopes, vision, inspiration, revelation and direction to move the nation to the next level in Jesus name. Amen.
