Today’s Reading:
2 Samuel 2:1-11
“It happened after that David inquired of the Lord, saying “shall I go to any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, ‘Go Up’...” (v.1)

It is common among human beings to ask, seek, request, and desire – information, truth, knowledge, direction, guidance, leading. This act is referred to as “inquiring”. People inquire from each other (believers and unbelievers), from family, friends, diviners and God. There are many examples in the Scripture, both in the Old and New Testaments, of those who inquired of/from God. Some of the purposes of their inquiring included: seeking His counsel, such as in respect of the future or decision to be taken; making choices; whether to go to battle or not; for divine direction, and so on. Other purposes included: knowing the will of God in one’s life or the people’s lives; and also, enabling them to identify God’s plan for their lives, individually or collectively.
In the Old Testament days, it was widespread practice for inquires to be made from God, especially by the leaders of the people and such as the Kings of Israel for example, Moses, Joshua, Jehoshaphat, David; also, prophets like Ezekiel, Jeremiah and also Daniel. In the New Testament's early days, since it was new to the dispensation of the Holy Spirit, believers and the church in general inquired from God through the Holy Spirit. In Acts 16:6, Paul and Barnabas, led by the Holy Spirit, were forbidden to preach in Asia, they had been separated from God for the work He had called them for (Acts 13:2). Also, in Acts 11:12, the Holy Spirit led Peter to follow men sent to him from Caesarea. Today, as believers we are fortunate that we can inquire from God directly through the Holy Spirit that lives in us. God the Father and Son have given us the Holy Spirit to lead, teach, guide, direct, reveal, help, search and even make intercession for us (1 Cor. 2:10-11). This makes inquiring from God direct, easier and probably more intimate.
It is pertinent to mention that David in particular, had the habit of continuously inquiring from God. It is said that he inquired nine (9) times from God in the books of 1st and 2nd Samuel alone. One of such is found in our Today’s reading in verse 1. Also, whenever he inquired from God, he asked completely and followed the instructions leading to the letter. Not only did he ask God if he should go to any of the cities of Judah, but he further asked where he should go. This is a show of complete trust in God. A good model of a personal close relationship with God. One can ask, why rely on God’s divine leading when one inquired from him? It is because He is the creator and God of the universe, to whom all His works are known (Is 46:10, 1 John 3:20, Acts 15:18); He sees and knows all things (Heb. 4:13, Rom 11:34); declares the end from the beginning (Is 46:10); his eyes run to and fro the earth (2 Chron. 16:9); He loves us with an everlasting love (Jer.31:3).
Therefore, He can be trusted with our lives and everything. Human beings do not have these qualities or knowledge. Many benefits are gained when we inquire from God and these include: one is blessed; will have peace of mind about the issue (Is 26:3); will have joy and personal satisfaction from doing the will of God; we will be doing the will of God since He says we should ask, and we will be given (Matt. 7:7); one is guided on life’s issues; because God is honoured, He in turn blesses one. In the case of David, his inquiring from God and following the leading, led him in verse 4 to being anointed king over the house of Judah and later over Israel as a whole. Other benefits in general include successes and victories in all spheres of life.
It, therefore, pays to inquire of/from God. However, first one must be his child, born again by believing and accepting the redemptive work Jesus came to the earth to accomplish. You must be born again. Once saved, when you inquire of him, He answers.
CHRISTIE KUPOLUYI
To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”
If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and report to the resident reverend, pastor or priest.
Prayer:
Father Almighty, we are thankful that you are the all-knowing, all-powerful and you are everywhere in heaven and on earth.
Father, we appreciate that you allow us to inquire from You.
Thank you, our heavenly Father, that you answer us when we inquire from you.
Lord our Savior, thank you for saving us and putting us in the position to inquire from the Father, free of charge.
Father, please open the eyes of believers in the church to see the privileges they have in You and Christ.
Father, please answer us when we inquire concerning our nation, do not ignore us because of the sins of the land.
