Today’s Reading:

Psalm 17 :1-7

O Lord, hear my plea for justice. Listen to my cry for help. Pay attention to my prayer, for it comes from an honest heart. Declare me innocent, for you know those who do right. (vv. 1-2 NLT)

In this Scripture passage, we encounter David - the Psalmist, who is in a worrisome state. In verses 1 and 2, with trembling lips, the Psalmist makes an adamant plea for God to do something, namely, to provide deliverance, protection and vindication from the wicked ones who surround his life. In the midst of agony, the Psalmist asserts that he has not followed the way of the wicked, but has lived a life characterized by righteousness. The Psalmist is completely confident that God will find nothing but positive evidence of an unwavering adherence to the paths and ways of the Lord, hence his invitation to the Lord to fully inspect his life for evidence of transgressions: Verse 3 (MSB) “ Go ahead, examine me from inside out, surprise me in the middle of the night-You will find I’m just what I say I am. My words don’t run loose”

An active, Living Relationship:

The structure and language of this Bible passage suggests that the relationship between the Psalmist and God is an active relationship. The Psalmist asks God to listen actively. He provides evidence of his faithfulness to God and finally makes an appeal for God to act on his behalf. This provides a strong and consistent reminder that God is not like false idols and gods made out of wood or stone. Rather, HE is a living God who remains actively involved in our affairs.

Therefore, we can carry our deepest burdens and worries to God with confidence just as the Psalmist has done in the scripture passage under reference. And like the Psalmist, we can ask God to protect and deliver us from harmful situations.
