The Berlin Wall, which separated East and West Germany, stood for 28 years between August 13, 1961 and November 9, 1989. One day, some people in East Berlin took lorry loads of garbage and dumped it on the West Berlin side of the wall. The people of West Berlin retaliated, but not as you would expect. They took lorry loads of canned food, bread, milk and other provisions, and neatly stacked them on the East Berlin side. On top of the stacks, they wrote, Each gives what he has”.

We have a waste problem in the world. We pollute our environment with piles of filth, we pollute our minds with brain-rotting content, and we pour bile of bitter words on our neighbour. Miriam and Aaron were punished for speaking against Moses, their brother. In return, he prays for their forgiveness. Jesus’ disciples found themselves battling a storm at sea, and they took fright. Peter dares to step into the water when he sees Jesus walking on it, and sinks because of doubt. Jesus saves Him and reassures the rest. Allow the peace of Christ to descend on your heart. The result is a deep love for God and for neighbour, which Saint Dominic understood and applied in his life.

  • The family is the first school of love. The way you treat your children is the tacit permission you give them to either love or hate themselves.

  • You will think and act like royalty if you see yourself as created in God’s image and likeness and more precious than gold. If you see yourself as filthy and unworthy of love, it will be evident in your carriage and behaviour.

  • Discovering God’s love in Jesus’s sacrificial death and resurrection is the turning point of how we can begin to see our intrinsic value and demand the respect we deserve from others. If God died for me, I will not be a slave to anyone or anything except Him.

  • When we recognise that Christ came to serve and not to be served, we instinctively assume the position of servants, seeing and ministering to Christ in each other (Mark 10:45; Matthew 25:40).

  • Do not malign people behind their backs. You are displaying your poor character even to those you gossip with. In charity, point out a person’s wrong to them and pray for them.

  • Everything you have is a gift from God and ought to be used carefully and cared for adequately.

  • Display dignity and love for your neighbour in the way you dispose of waste. Use waste bins, sort your trash properly, desist from burning indiscriminately, do not block drainages with waste, join community cleaning efforts, do not litter our streets, and correct those who litter.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully seek out a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor, or priest.

PRAYER:

  1. Eternal Father, help me to see myself as you see me, to treat myself and my neighbour as royalty, to speak well of others and pray for their conversion.

  2. Teach me to face my fears and turn to you in moments of doubt. May I become more like you and less like what I hate and detest? Amen.

  3. May God take away from you all that does not give Him glory and fill you with the oil of gladness, the dew of grace, the speed of excellence, the purity of spirit, the fervour of reverence and the peace which no one can understand, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
