30 years is the average period it takes for children to be born and grow up to have children of their own—so we call it a generation. What is the mindset of a people who grew up as slaves over a period of 14 generations? This is the story of Israel’s departure from Egypt. If everyone you ever knew was born into slavery, it is hard to comprehend freedom. Even though they were physically free, there was still a lot of work to be done on their minds.

  • They have to govern themselves.

  • They have to organise themselves.

  • They have to protect themselves.

  • They have to plan for their sustenance.

  • They have to chart the course for their future as a people.

  • And secure the futures for generations yet unborn.

When you stop to think of the mental energy involved in becoming liberated, you will resign yourself to your fate as a slave. But is that really the solution?

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is portrayed as the silent healer, the one who does not shout or cry out, who does not draw attention to Himself. Instead, He quietly and gently brings restoration. Quoting Isaiah, Matthew tells us that in Christ “a bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not quench”. Jesus draws especially close to the weak, wounded and nearly extinguished. These are precisely the ones He gently lifts, re-ignites, and restores. Remember when I said that mental liberation is a lot harder than physical freedom? This is truest when we choose to be slaves to sin and death rather than to be liberated in Christ.

You are not condemned to slavery of any kind. God meant for us to be free physically, mentally and most importantly, spiritually. A person who is a slave to sin is the most pitiable. So, what have you surrendered your freedom to? Who is holding you bound? Choose Christ today, who wants you to be free (Galatians 5:1). And like Him, set others free: forgive those who have wronged you, appreciate those who have supported you, speak kindly of those who have encouraged you, flee from those who are proud of their sinful slavery and pray fervently for everyone.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Lord, set me free from every form of slavery, mental, physical, spiritual, all that I have submitted to consciously or unconsciously.

  2. Take away everything in me which brings you dishonour and plant my feet securely in obedience to you. Amen.
