It is no news that we live in the post-Christian era; an era in which Christianity (even for Christians) is not enough and is not the core of their beliefs. People speak of “energies” instead of the Spirit, “vibes” in place of divine impulse and “feelings” instead of intimacy through prayer. The average person is more likely to call themselves “sexy” than beautiful. This is not entirely their fault. We are bombarded, in this age, with an avalanche of information via social and mass media. Some of this information is superstitious at best and often misleading. These superstitious beliefs form the core of the average Christian mind. Where then do we go to find the truth which ought to guide us in our walk with Christ?

Jesus promises us the Holy Spirit in today’s Gospel reading: “But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will lead you to the complete truth” (John 16:13). So, there is truth and the hope of finding it. And that hope comes when we invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts. May the power of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, enlighten your heart and mind always. Amen. We should seek the truth not only for ourselves.

Christians should be channels of the truth for others, especially people who do not know any better. St Paul inspires us with his visit to Athens, where he engages the intellectuals in that city in an inter-faith dialogue:

  • First, he affirms their religiosity.

  • He then affirmed their search for the true God, whom they labelled “the unknown God”.

  • He proceeds to present them with the Gospel with the Resurrected Christ at its core.

  • Although many laughed at him, Paul at least made an effort.

Often, we are slow to share our Christian convictions with others, either out of fear or owing to a lack of conviction. Nevertheless, we share with others what we have and pass on our convictions. If these articles of our faith are poorly founded, it is evident in the quality of truth we share with others. Either way, you are never neutral; you are either leading people to Christ or misleading them. Are you conscious of the ideas that form your beliefs? Are you conscious of the ideas you are consuming and sharing? Are you sharing Christian or anti-Christian sentiments on social media? You will give an account to God of how well or poorly you have represented Him (Matthew 10:33). May the promised Spirit fill your heart today and lead you to truth.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, it is in You that we live and move and have our being. Instruct us by the words of Scripture, inspire our actions by the power of the Holy Spirit. Make us docile to the teachings and guidance of Your Church, and may our lives give light to others through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  2. Eternal Father, I believe that you are here with me and you will never let me go. It is in you that I live and move and have my being. Move me by the power of your Spirit and transform me and the world around me for your glory. Amen
