Today’s Reading:
Psalm 8:1-9
“You have made him to have dominion over the works of your hands, you have put everything under his feet”. (v. 6)
It is common knowledge that when a person is in charge of something or another human being or rules or has authority over it or him/her, then he is said to have dominion. Generally, the word “Dominion” means power; authority, jurisdiction; control; command; or right to rule govern or determine. In the circular world, people are known to exercise dominion in areas such as: physical, financial, emotional, and spiritual. Knowing the importance of “Dominion”, the perfect God, right at the point of creation gave the man, Adam, He created dominion over all other living things that were created (Gen 1:26-28). So God gave authority and put man in charge of his creation. However, so very early then, man lost the dominion to the devil, through disobedience to God (Gen 3:1-7). The devil became the prince of the air, exercising dominion over the earth and everything in it.
In God’s infinite mercies and graciousness, He immediately began to release the pre-determined plan of salvation and, therefore, recovery of the lost dominion. In Gen 3:15, God told the devil that He would put enmity between him and the woman (Eve), he first deceived to disobey God, and between the devil’s seed and the seed, who is Jesus Christ. About two centuries later, Jesus came to the world in the flesh to pay the price, through his blood, cross, death and resurrection, for man’s reconciliation back to God. With his victory over death and the devil, mankind can now enjoy God’s presence and relationship and can get back dominion from the devil. The victory that Jesus won is for all mankind in general. For the victory to be allocated and enjoyed personally, each person has to decide and also have the dominion back, by accepting the redemptive sacrifice Jesus made to recover the once lost dominion. Once the person becomes a believer, all the victories Jesus won automatically become his/her. For instance, the person will be able to do all things through Christ who strengthens him/her (Phil 4:13). The person is sitting with Jesus in the heavenly places far above all principalities, power and might and dominion (Eph 1:19-22; 2:6), the devil is under his/her feet, all the promises of God and Jesus are now available to him/her. The power of the Holy Spirit who now dwells in us becomes available for a dominion walk throughout life.
How best should one exercise his/her dominion on earth? It is important to know that the dominion God gave man is not to be used to control fellow human beings. Rather, it is to be exercised for stewardship; care-giving; battle against the devil and his kingdom; contributing to the body of Christ; evangelizing (Mk 16:15-18; Matt 28:18-20); effectively using the weapons of warfare to the advantage of the body of Christ; rejoicing in the victory won by Jesus by praising and worshipping and sowing into the lives of others. It is pertinent to mention that one can lose God-given dominion through; carelessness (for example comfort or fame), arrogance, disobedience (lawlessness), unrepentance, and so on. To maintain or hold fast to our dominion, the following need to be done; total submission to the Holy Spirit; fervent prayer; humility; reading, studying, activating the word of God; putting on the whole armour of God continuously; living and walking in faith and love of God.
As a believer, you are to exercise your recovered dominion to glorify God on earth.
CHRISTIE KUPOLUYI
To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of your Holy Spirit, Take control of my heart and lead me in your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord”.
