Today’s Reading:
Ps 63:1-8; Exodus 40:34-38; Revelation 18:1-10, 19-20
“In all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the Israelites went onward; 37 But if the cloud was not taken up, they did not journey on till the day that it was taken up. “ (Exodus 40:36-37)

The glory of God is the tangible, felt and expressed presence of God in a place. It is expression, it is undeniable because its effect is often grand. Such was the experience of the Israelites as they journeyed through the wilderness, making their way to Canaan. When God’s glory invades a place, it is better experienced than explained. When God’s glory (immortality) is revealed, mortality cannot withstand its impact. Of course, it was a mark of honour for God’s presence and an expression of worship for Moses to stay out. However, these days, God calls us to be partakers of His glory through the grace made available in Christ.
It is also important to highlight the value of obedience, sensitivity, and honour for God as we journey through life. In verses 36 and 37, we realize that as self-willed as they could be, they relinquished their power to take decisions to the prompting of God’s presence. The cloud of glory became the signal they followed to either move or stay in a place. How often do we live our lives, making decisions and choices at the prompting of the Lord’s presence and Spirit? How often do we come to terms with the fact that only God’s guidance for our lives can truly make us accomplish our divinely inspired goals and visions? Until this happens, we will be striving in vain and exposing ourselves to unnecessary danger.
In verse 37, we also realize that God will always distinguish Himself in our lives if we give Him the space and follow His leading. Throughout all their journey the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel. We must make our hearts and lives tabernacles for the Lord to live. When we do so, the revelation of His glory becomes a constant experience, and He shall distinguish Himself in ways men cannot fathom.
