Today’s Reading:
Revelation 2:8-11
“Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. ... But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life” (v.10)
This was a letter to the Church of Smyrna-a persecuted church. The writer acknowledges their commitment, sufferings and loses for the cause of Christ. He encourages them not to be discouraged but through Christ to keep their eyes on the reward. It comes as a reminder to believers to keep looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb.12:2).
Faithfulness speaks of complete trust, commitment, and confidence in the one who has the power to keep and uphold one to the end. It is the confidence and trust in the power of God to carry you through your challenging moment for the sake of the Gospel. It shows reliance on God’s grace and power in the midst of persecution. Faithfulness is the ability to hold on to God’s promises without wavering even when things seem not to be working well. Again, faithfulness encourages one to always focus on the heavenly reward rather than the temporary earthly benefits. It enables believer to stand for God even if he has to stand alone. Faithfulness will help a believer to choose Jesus rather than silver or God.
Is your faith being threatened because of your faith in Christ? Do not see persecution as something strange. To believers in Christ persecution is a default. It is a sign of godly living and faithfulness in Christ. The Bible says “ ...those who will live godly in Christ will suffer persecution” (2 Tim. 3:12). Jesus was also tempted that is why He is able to uphold those who are being tempted for His name. When your faith is tested will you be found faithful? Remember! Those who receive reward in a race are those who run the race successfully to the end. Shalom!!!
“So then, those who suffer according to God’s will, should commit themselves to their faithful creator and continue to do good” (1 Peter 4:19). Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
