Today’s Readings:

Genesis 17:3-9

Psalm 105:4-9

John 8:51-59

We all want Abraham’s blessings, but are we doing Abraham’s work? God says, “Your name shall be Abraham, for I make you father of a multitude of nations...I will make you into nations, and your issue shall be kings” (Genesis 17:4,5).  This blessing comes with a condition: “You on your part shall maintain my Covenant, yourself and your descendants after you, generation after generation” (Genesis 17:9).

Here are a few things I wish someone had told me about attracting blessings:

  • Value your name: You are a Christian—Like Christ. Let it be evident in all you say and do.

  • Do the work: This means showing up on time, daily, consistently, serving excellently, joyfully and devoutly. And yes, it is possible.

  • Be selfless: The heart of every relationship and the basis for every blessing is that it should not be done for selfish motives. The goal should always be to serve others.

  • Show genuine concern for others: People know when you are simply using them for your benefit. If a person is important to you, do not just wait until you need them before you reach out. Go out of your way to remind them that they are important to you. A call, a text message and a word of prayer will go a long way.

  • Focus more on what you can give: When others see the level of self-sacrifice you bring to your service, they will have no option but to give you more responsibility. With it will come more benefits.

  • Communicate effectively: Speak well and say what is on your mind. Do not presume that others are mind-readers. Let them know what you think and how you feel.

  • Be grateful: A gift is a privilege and not a right. So, say “Thank you” when others take from their resources and help you. It is coming from a place of sacrifice and not abundance. Receive it with gratitude and not entitlement.

  • Think before you speak: Weighing your words before you say them to others is a sign of civility. Let your thoughts towards others be what you wish for yourself. If you have vetted your thoughts this way, then feel free to speak.

  • Mind your bad tongue: Not everything that crosses your mind should be said out loud (or texted). If you do not mind your bad tongue, it will get you into trouble.

  • Apologise when you are wrong: We are not perfect every time. We overstep sometimes. You may intend something else and say something completely different. This is why “I am sorry” should not be far from your heart and your lips.

  • When in doubt, ask questions: No one expects you to have all the answers. But they expect you to ask questions and be willing to seek answers. Putting effort into self-development is a gift that will continue to give.

  • Know when you have fallen out of favour: When people you were once close to begin to step away or begin to count their words around you, ask yourself if you are responsible. Also, ask them questions like, “I have noticed your coldness towards me. Did I do something wrong?”. You will never know unless you ask.

  • Be open to guidance and correction: Never cheat yourself out of a learning experience. Every successful person today, learnt what they know from other successful people. A closed mind is often bankrupt.

To surrender your life to Christ, say this prayer aloud. “Father, I acknowledge my sin against You. I repent and ask for forgiveness, in the name of Jesus. I surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, take control of my heart and lead me in Your path of righteousness. Thank you, Lord.”

If you said the prayer, Congratulations! You are welcome to the body of Christ. Prayerfully look for a living church and meet the resident reverend, pastor or priest.

Prayer:

  1. Eternal Father, you have called each of us by name and destined us for eternal happiness. Here on earth, we enjoy the signs and moments of your blessings. Help us to attract your blessings by attentiveness to others and selfless service. Amen.

  2. May your blessings come from a genuine and selfless spirit, from diligence and excellence, for prayer and response to the needs of others. You are blessed beyond a curse and above the reproach of the evil one, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
